Peter Beitsch, MD

Peter Beitsch, MD, provides comprehensive breast cancer care at his practice at Dallas Surgical Group, including breast cancer surgery, identifying and treating women at high risk for breast cancer, and genetic testing. He also specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of melanoma and rare or complex skin cancers.

Dr. Beitsch graduated third in his class at the University of Texas (UT) Southwestern Medical School in Dallas. He completed his General Surgery Residency at UT Southwestern during which he completed a National Cancer Institute fellowship at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. He completed his Surgical Oncology Fellowship at the John Wayne Cancer Institute in Santa Monica, California. He trained with the father of sentinel lymph node biopsy, Dr. Donald Morton, and brought this innovative technique back to Dallas. Dr. Beitsch has received ASBS-certification in breast ultrasound.

Dr. Beitsch is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, where he’s active in breast cancer research and has placed hundreds of women into cutting-edge studies in partial breast irradiation, genomics, and cancer genetics. His other main research focus is in melanoma, serving as an investigator in the Sunbelt Melanoma Trial and the Multicenter Selective Lymphadenectomy Trial II. He is currently participating in the MAVIS melanoma vaccine study, neo-adjuvant breast cancer registries and the iGAP Registry (a continuation of his Universal Breast Cancer Genetic Testing Registry which recommended changing testing guidelines to include ALL women with breast cancer).

Maintaining active membership in several professional organizations, Dr. Beitsch is a past President of the American Society of Breast Surgeons. He has given numerous national and international presentations and published major articles in medical journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, Annals of Surgical Oncology and the Journal of Clinical Oncology.

As a board-certified general surgeon, Dr. Beitsch is in practice at Medical City Dallas Hospital and North Central Surgical Hospital. He has volunteered on the Breast Cancer Detection Committee of the American Cancer Society where he received their Caring Spirit Award for his commitment to breast cancer prevention and treatment. He has received numerous awards, including Macy’s Heart and Soul award for his work with the YWCA Breast Cancer Detection Projects and the Founder’s Award of the Bridge Breast Program.

Dr. Beitsch is especially proud to be voted Best Doctor in D Magazine for the past 15 years. He has also been elected to the Texas Monthly – Texas Super Doctor List for over a decade.
